In episode 9 of “Can I Ask You One Question?”, I tracked down Dr. Joseph Allen, an OD with over 370K subscribers on his Youtube channel, for his thoughts on ways to build a following on social media.
Below are the key points from the interview. Scroll down to see the entire interview.
What you’re posting is not about you, it’s about who you’re trying to talk to.
“You need to add value to that person’s life.”
Grab someone’s attention by sharing something interesting.
This also builds likeability, which gives you an open door to ask for something in return (Ie. Subscribe, comment, schedule an appointment).
Credibility is built with people in your local community who have seen your content.
Where the temptation is to just share healthcare info, you have to “hook” the person first, and adding an emotion component (anger, fear, humor, etc.) can help.
Edutainment: Combine education with entertainment to build an emotional connection.
Once you’ve hooked a viewer, they are more likely to invest in and engage with your content.
